The wildfires sweeping through Los Angeles are some of the most catastrophic in the city’s history. Among the thousands impacted is Jhené Aiko, who shared on Thursday (Jan. 9) her home is completely destroyed.
“Our home is gone. Burned to the ground with all of our belongings inside,” Aiko revealed in an emotional Instagram post. Though the message has since been deleted, the singer expressed gratitude for her and her children’s safety despite the loss. She added, “Starting from scratch. My heart is so heavy.”
Aiko also extended her prayers to others affected by the tragedy, writing, “Praying for everyone this morning. Those who lost their home, their life’s work, or their life. Praying for my city, the wildlife, and lost pets. Praying for the world. Let suffering be a gift, a lesson in compassion.”
While many offered prayers, others criticized Aiko’s post saying unlike the average person, she has celebrity status to help her recover. Addressing the backlash under a repost by The Neighborhood Talk, the “Sativa” singer defended herself, stating, “I worked tirelessly for years, through immense pain, to provide my children with this house. I put everything into it.” She ended her response with empathy, saying, “Praying none of you ever experience this.”
The wildfires began Tuesday morning (Jan. 7) and have displaced over 100,000 residents. Other artists including Kid Cudi, Meek Mill, and The Game, have also spoken out about the crisis. Kid Cudi shared his own evacuation experience, urging others to act quickly if ordered to leave.
